ISA MAHARASHTRA along with ISA KOLKATA Section organized a successful technical webinar on 10th October, 2020 on the topic “LIGHTNING PROTECTION AS PER LATEST INDIAN STANDARD”.
The topic was presented by DrSudip Sen.

Dr. SUDIP, in his presentation, started right from the basics about LIGHTNING and SURGE and what challenges and risks it poses to various installations of electronic and electrical devices, be it at our residential level, open fields or big industrial plants etc.
The presented technical facts in the introduction about dealing with a natural phenomenon of amplitude in order of approximately 200 Kilo Amperes in a time span of 10uS was an eyeopener to everyone.

With a clear approach that, Once you know the nature of your problem only then you can reach a solution, after explaining the issues, Dr. Sudip then further explained the thought process, the assessment techniques and the methods that can be implemented to protect your instruments, structures, your control systems and even yourselves during an event of lighting.

A simple and a scientific myth buster that was one of the good takeaways from the webinar which we would like to share is that :-
“Having a tallest structure in vicinity of other relatively smaller structures does not 100% guarantee that lightning will never strike the smaller structures. It will only reduce the probability of the lightning striking the smaller structures.” and so every building / structures should have their own measures in place for lightning protection.

The session was followed by a short Q&A round, in which Dr. Sudip satisfactorily clarified all the participant’s queries with value added points from his experience.
